The A24 ends with the acquisition of global rights on “Sorry, Baby”, one of the more buzzing films at the following year film Film Festival.
The film sparked an auction war of several days with Neon and Mubi among the independent studios of the mix. Sources indicate that the price is close to the $ 8 million mark.
Like the line line for “Sorry, baby” teases: “Something bad happened to Agnes. But life continues … for everyone around her, at least. The actress Eva Victor wrote, produced and features in the film, about a university professor who recalls a sexual assault. Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges Co-Star in “Sorry, baby”, which was produced by the filmmaker “Moonlight” Barry Jenkins. The film was created on Monday evening at the Eccles Theater, where the public of Park City kissed the poignant drama with a standing ovation.
In Variety Revue, the Chief Cinema critic Peter Debruge described the film as a “disar view and slowed down”. “It is not easy to make a film on trauma when its ancients – those who make the rules and guess opportunities – always feel that the appropriate response to adversity is to harden and continue”, a- he wrote in his review. “If” sorry, baby “works, it’s because Victor hits such a delicate tone: (their) beginning is warm and compassionate, advancing a conversation for which we always try to find the words.”
It was a slow glacial market in Sundance, with only two other films that have won a sale so far. Seven days after the start of the festival, Neon caught “Together”, a body horror thriller with the real couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, somewhere between 10 and 15 million dollars. And Netflix caught the drama of Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones “Train Dreams” a day later. Several speaking titles, such as the dark comedy of Dylan O’Brien, “Twinless”, the Technicolor by Jennifer Lopez “Kiss of the Spider Woman” adaptation, and the documentary of Marlee Matlin “Not Semel”, remain without buyers.
UTA independent film group has structured funding and negotiated the agreement for “sorry, baby” on behalf of the filmmakers. Charades managed by international sales and co-compounded in the American winner is replaced by CAA, Management 360 and Felker Toczek.
