To a small Known Channel YouTube, a windy British narrator explains the ins and outs of Doom: dark ages‘ history. Although he is not named, his voice can be familiar to video game fans like that of Mark Brown. The problem is that Brown had nothing to do with the video.
Brown, which goes through the game manufacturer’s toolbox, has been a content creator and a developer who has covered video game design for more than a decade. His channel has 220 videos, broadcast to more than 1.65 million subscribers, where he gives in -depth explanations on things like puzzle mechanics in puzzle in puzzle in puzzle in puzzle in puzzle Blue prince or solves user interface problems in Zelda’s legend: echoes of wisdom. (Brown has already written for Wired UK.)
THE Loss The video, published on a channel called Offline Lore game, is not the typical Brown content. But the problem is actually larger than that: Brown has never really told this video. Instead, he says, the creator of Game Offline Lore used an Ai version of his voice as he or his consent. “The thought that someone else would do to copy my character in this way – it’s so bizarre and invasive,” he says. “It’s a bit like plagiarism but more personal. It is not my work or my work. It is a distinct part of whom I am. “
The Fraud led by AI is increasing. Deepfakes, formerly confined to harmful videos affecting celebrities and average citizens, is now sufficiently advanced to occur in real time. While AI infiltrates all aspects of our lives, from work to emotional support, youtubers like Brown are faced with an increasing problem: the flight not only of their work but of their voices.
Brown has filed a confidentiality complaint in YouTube, which generally gives the offender 48 hours to remove their video before YouTube officially gets involved. As a rule, he says, YouTube “has fairly robust systems” and tools to have these videos removed. But Brown says it’s been over 48 hours since he held his hand. The two videos remain live. Their creator, he said, deleted the comments where people say they stole Brown’s voice.
YouTube’s spokesman Jack Malon told Wired that he widen his confidentiality request policy last year “to allow users to request the deletion of the synthetic or modified content generated by the AI-AI which simulates their face or their voice.” Malon claims that the company examines the content to determine if a violation has been brought. “We are going to act if the content violates our policies,” he says.
Wired could not find the contact details of the person behind Game Offline Lore.
Brown tells Wired that his videos are often the product of more than 100 hours of work, material search, script writing, game recording and publishing. “Everyone is an important project that takes two or three weeks to produce – with shortcuts such as using AI,” he said.
He says he learned the Loss Video after she was sent to him by someone who watched her; They thought it looked like an AI version of his voice and wanted to alert him. A second video that seems to present his voice is also online, it on the tradition of the series. Brown was shocked. He knew that such a thing was possible – Brown had done his own bot ai to reproduce his voice for scratch voices, before replacing him with his final audio, but finding that someone else had raised the voice was incredible.
Game Offline Lore, the chain in question, is small, with 744,000 subscribers. Many of his 259 videos are shorts, and those who have a narration are clearly AI. But the full length video featuring the visible voice generated by Brown is more popular than many others, with more than 60,000 views. In addition, says Brown, he probably collects “a good amount” of advertising money.
As a content creator, says Brown, he is used to his work to be raised in various ways. He has treated people who are spreading watching his videos or even downloading his work on their channels.
He did not speak to the person who runs the offline match. “I do not believe that anyone would do it would be empathetic at all,” he said. “In the same way that it would be frustrating for someone to take advantage after complaining, it is frustrating that someone is enjoying the use of your personality.”
