A woman is refused a job by the Paris Opera for her conservative past

A Frenchwoman who took part in a five-month internship at a conservative French newspaper says she was rejected for a position at the Paris Opera because of her right-wing past.

The woman, named Adélaïde, claims to have applied for several jobs following her internship at the Current Values newspaper and received a job offer from the Association for the Radiation of the Paris Opera (AROP), which granted him an interview earlier this week.

In an opinion piece for Current Valuesshe said her experience in the interview started out normal until the interviewer asked her about her past at the newspaper and the articles she had written for other French conservative outlets, calling them a ‘”far right”.

“Not wanting ‘my past’ to interfere with the interview, I explained to [the manager] that having studied for five years at the Sorbonne and forged invaluable links with students on the left, I have no trouble working with people who defend ideas opposed to mine,” Adelaide wrote, explaining that she was impartial in his job.

Nevertheless, she said the interviewer told her that other employees were of “immigrant” background and that she would not be able to “promote the Paris Opera’s diversity line”, and that the interview was therefore a waste of time for both of them.

After being confronted with the issue of diversity of opinion, the interviewer reportedly told Adelaide: ‘Madam, racism is not an opinion, it is a crime’, reportedly added: ‘The world of culture is left, don’t waste your time applying.

Woke hiring practices in various institutions are not new, however. In December last year, for example, the University of Oxford in the UK proposed a system of wake-up scores when considering the qualifications of prospective scholars wishing to work at the university.

Oxford’s Racial Equality Task Force even required candidates to show their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) as part of the hiring process.
