A woman accidentally shot herself in the leg in the parking lot of a Target in Stoughton on Monday night, police say.

Shortly before 7pm, Stoughton Police responded to a report of a person being shot dead in the car park outside the big box store at 1 Hawes Way.

The woman, who has not been identified, was shot in the leg, Chief Donna McNamara said in a statement.

After an initial investigation, police believe the woman “suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound”.

Stoughton Fire Rescue transported the woman to a Boston area hospital after being treated at the scene. His injuries are believed not to be life-threatening, McNamara said.

Police seized a firearm and said the woman cooperated fully with authorities.

The incident is still under investigation.
