Wellington, New Zealand (AP)-A tsunami warning was canceled for Papua New Guinea after a high magnitude of 6.9 earthquakes, according to US Geological Survey.
The earthquake was shallow, striking the island nation of the Pacific to a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) on Saturday morning. It was centered offshore, 194 km (120 miles) east of the city of Kimbe, on the island of New Britain.
The Pacific Tsunami warning center then canceled an alert issued immediately after the jolt that warned against waves of 1 to 3 meters along certain parts of the coast of Papua-Nouvelle-Guinea. Caution concerning 0.3 m smaller waves emitted for neighboring Salomon Islands was also canceled.
There was no immediate damage. Just over 500,000 people live on the island of New Britain.
The Meteorology Office of Australia said that there was no threat of tsunami for the country, which is the closest neighbor to Papua New Guinea. No warning was issued for New Zealand.
Papua New Guinea is found on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where a large part of the earthquake and volcanic activity of the world occurs.
