A tropical wave has a 70% chance of developing, according to the NHC

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center is tracking two tropical waves in the Atlantic, including one with a 70% chance of developing.

The NHC said a tropical wave located several hundred miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

According to the NHC, a tropical depression or tropical storm will likely form this weekend several hundred kilometers east of the Windward Islands.

“The tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic Ocean is expected to slowly organize and could become our next depression or tropical storm in the next seven days,” said Max Defender 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann. “It will fight off the dust coming from the Sahara Desert which will limit its ability to become too strong. Most computer forecast models take the system westward, toward the Caribbean Sea.

Another tropical wave located over the west-central Caribbean Sea is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves quickly westward at around 25 mph.

The NHC said the system could gradually develop later this week as it moves over the western Caribbean Sea or southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It has a 20 percent chance of developing.
