Proposed in 1947 and ratified in 1951, the 22nd amendment was written to prevent a rehearsal of the unprecedented election of President Franklin Roosevelt for four terms.

To date, Roosevelt is the only president to have been elected for more than two terms. He died in 1945, less than 90 days after his fourth investiture.

During his political career, Trump hinted several times that he was ready to make more than two terms.
