Matthew Labrot seems to be an unlikely face of resistance to Tesla. He drives a cybertruck and a model and feeds his house with the company’s solar energy system. He trained Tesla employees for the sale of electric cars across North America. If you’ve watched one of the automotive manufacturer’s customer support videos, you may have seen it.

He called her his dream work.

But in the past two years, Labrot, a self -proclaimed democrat, has become more and more disenchanted with the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk. His feelings began to turn after the purchase by Musk de Twitter and embittered more on Musk’s work for President Donald Trump. On April 24, Labrot created a Protestant website against Musk’s leadership at Tesla’s. The next day, he took his cybertruck to a Tesla demonstration to withdrawal from California. Less than 24 hours later, he was dismissed.

“I did not intend to work elsewhere,” Labrot told Business Insider. “I was very happy with my position, and I could have continued to play in this role all my life.”

While hundreds of demonstrations outside Tesla installations have emerged across the country, Tesla employees have greatly refrained from speaking publicly on the issue. Labrot wants to change that.

Labrot, 35, joined Tesla in 2019 after stays at Best Buy, Starbucks and real estate. He quickly got up with the car manufacturer, finally entering a role in management of the program training and delivery in North America.

He was initially attracted to the company because he believed in the mission of sustainable energy. He had always been impressed by Tesla’s products and the people who work there, he said. This also offered him huge opportunities: he raised the company’s scale, and the performance of the company’s stellar actions helped him buy his first house in 2022.

He first started to question Musk’s leadership after the billionaire resumed Twitter in 2022.

“Unfortunately, at that time, I chose the route to simply stick my head in the sand,” he said.

He said he had trouble ignoring when Musk started donating to Trump’s campaign. Musk spent at least $ 277 million in political contributions to Trump and other Republican candidates before the presidential election. He also organized a million dollars of gifts for voters who signed the petition for his Super Pac. Musk officially approved Trump on July 13.

He was particularly offended by a Salvian musk produced during the celebration of the inauguration of Trump in January, that Labrot and other criticisms thought they were a veiled Nazi salute.

“When your CEO makes one of these decisions, she draws the business with her,” said Labrot.

After salvation, Musk suggested in an article on X that the Democrats were behind the critics. He later said in an interview with Joe Rogan that he was “not Nazi”.

In October 2024, Musk said he did not think his political activities would affect Tesla, saying that sales were at a record level. “I think people really care about the quality of the product rather than knowing if they agree or in disagreement with the opinions of the CEO. The CEO of a given company will have political opinions,” he said. “In the end, what matters is if Tesla makes an excellent product, and people like to buy good products.”

Labrot said his experience in the field did not support Musk’s prediction.

“At the time of the elections, we really started to realize that these customers that we expected to see did not come,” said Labrot. The end of the year is generally when Tesla sales are the highest, he added, and said that the company was aimed at overcoming the dull summer delivery numbers in the fourth quarter.

While pedestrian traffic was starting to drop, Labrot said that the Tesla sales team was informed that it was more important than ever to win each client who has gone through the doors. Tesla started to push more promotions and sales incentives, which was unusual, said Labrot. The sales staff had normally working on a backlog of customers; If we decided not to buy, there was someone ready to take their place. Now the sellers were fighting to close each reserve.

Labrot said he was used to managing typical EV obstacles: range anxiety, disinformation, user error. But a CEO who had alienated the voters on the left was a completely different challenge.

“We did not have to overcome the objections because these customers have stopped coming,” said Labrot.

Earlier this year, Labrot said that Tesla’s sales team has reached another level of panic while electric vehicles have started to accumulate in sales prizes. Even the model refreshed by Tesla did not sell as they hoped, he said. Tesla released the vehicle in January and already has an excess inventory, said Labrot. He published a cheaper version of the Rafashed model on May 6.

In April, Tesla indicated that its delivery numbers in the first quarter had dropped by 13% compared to the same period the previous year. In California, a key market for the company, Tesla registrations fell by more than 15% in the first quarter.

Analysts say that there are several factors at stake regarding Tesla sales, including the alienation of customers on Musk’s political opinions, the company’s range of aging vehicles, increased businesses abroad and the overall American electric vehicle market.

A Tesla spokesperson did not respond to a request for comments.

At the beginning of 2025, Labrot became more and more frustrated by Tesla. It was not satisfied with the lack of internal communication of the company on the way in which Musk’s political opinions can affect sales figures, as well as rare advice on the way sellers should manage manifestations and vandalism.

“They talk about sales in difficulty and how to increase the close rate, not to mention this huge elephant in the room,” he said.

Over the months, Labrot said he had started to express his concerns more to his colleagues and during a meeting with other company sales employees. The tilting point came on April 22, when Musk announced that it would spend less time in Doge and return to Tesla.

Two days later, he published his website, which he kept anonymous. He contained an open letter calling Tesla to find a new CEO.

“When it was put online, I felt so relieved, as if a weight had been lifted,” said Labrot. “This statement that I tried to put into words, expressed in the company’s meetings – finally publishing was a very good feeling.”

While the open letter was written as if it came from several Tesla employees, Labrot said he was the only author – but that some colleagues had expressed similar feelings to him.

In conversations with more than a dozen current and old employees, many told Bi that they had concerns about the leadership and political orientation of Musk. Others have largely raised the shoulders of Musk’s behavior. A long -standing engineer said that even if Musk could be the company’s face, his role is very far from the daily life of Tesla’s average employee.

On April 25, Labrot painted in spray its cybertruck with information on its website and the slogan “Pro Clean Energy Pro Sustainability Pro EV Pro Tesla Anti Elon” and displayed it outside a Tesla installation. He said it looked like a next logical step and a good way to draw attention to the letter.

The next day, he said that he had received a call from the Tesla human resources department. He said that he had been informed that his job had been dismissed for using the company’s resources to create a website that did not eat on the business point of view. Labrot denied having used Tesla Resources to build the site.

Since his dismissal, Labrot has continued to attend Tesla demonstrations and said he has received the support of certain former Tesla employees. Leaving Tesla was a bitter pill to swallow, he said, but he understood the risks when he launched the website.

Aside from Musk’s policy, Labrot said that there was a cheerleader for the brand.

“I still firmly believe in the company and what we work,” he said.
