A strong earthquake rocks Taiwan, collapsing buildings and causing a tsunami – NBC Chicago

A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan early Wednesday, shaking the entire island and causing buildings to collapse. Japan has issued a tsunami warning for the Okinawa island group in southern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicted a tsunami of up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) after the 7:58 a.m. quake. About half an hour later, it said the first wave of the tsunami would have already arrived on the coast of Miyako. and the Yaeyama Islands.

Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency gave a magnitude of 7.2 while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.5.

Television showed buildings in the eastern Taiwan city of Hualien being shaken from their foundations. The earthquake could be felt in the capital Taipei.
