A 15 -year -old girl was attacked during her long Beach swimming test by a sea lion overshadowed by a recent proliferation of toxic algae, according to the girl’s family.
Phoebe Beltran ended his swimming test on the junior junior cadet junior nearly 2100 Ocean boulevard on Sunday, she told Times.
When she swam during the swimming of 1,000 yards, she felt a “biting sensation” on her right arm again and again. The teenager was drilled underwater, saw a shadow and feared that it was a shark.
“I was so afraid,” she said. “I thought it was a shark who was going to bite my arm and kill me.”
Phoebe’s mother Bibiana Beltran said she heard her daughter shouting for help. She noticed something brown in the water, what she thought first was the seaweed.
The rescuers rushed to help the girl rhyme, and Bibiana saw a sea lion burst her head over the water. She then saw other sea lions in water.
“When she was close enough, we noticed that her arm was bloody,” said Bibiana Beltran. “As a mother, you panic because you don’t plan to be your child.”
According to experts, toxic algae events have been aggravated with the warming of ocean temperatures caused by climate change and ocean acidification due to the runoff of nitrate.
A surfer reported last month an attack by a marine lion who was “wild, almost demonic” as he was on his board of directors of the county of Ventura.
In the latest incident, paramedical paramedics quickly gave Phoebe for his injuries, and she was rushed to the emergency room.
The girl has injuries and perforation scratches but did not need stitches.
“Physically, I improve myself a lot,” said Phoebe. “I had pain relievers and antibiotics. It was an emotional mountain in general, without knowing what was going on and having moments of flashbacks. ”
Bibiana Beltran said that the emergency room had contacted a local marine mammal center to get advice on how to treat a sea lion attack, because the doctor had never seen it before. She said that the doctor had been informed of the toxic flowering of algae that made sea lions sick and sometimes aggressive.
“We are just grateful that it is not as bad as we think when you hear cries from water,” said Bibiana.
Sea lions and other ocean mammals in southern California fell ill after a recent poisoning event.
Ingestion of domoic acid from harmful algae flowers can cause seafood or crises or tighten your head in a movement called “star”. They can also fall into a comatose state. Experts advise people not to interact with animals that are considered sick because they could rush aggressively or even bite.
