His comments come after Politico reported that Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, recommends raising sanctions against Russian energy infrastructure, including gas pipelines from Russia-German of Russia-German, as part of potential peace negotiations.
This decision reflects a wider effort from Trump’s team to reset relations with Moscow. Witkoff has held several series of talks with Russian officials, excluding Ukraine from the negotiating table. The discussions focused on the softening of tensions and the reopening of economic ties while precipitating a cease-fire agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Beyond the social democrats, the proposal raised concerns in Germany, where dependence on Russian gas was considerably reduced after the large-scale invasion of Moscow in 2022 of Ukraine.
The German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action rejected the idea of reactivating pipeline, regardless of what becomes American sanctions.
“The North Stream 2 pipeline is not certified and has not been legally approved. As such, the use of the pipeline is not even under study,” a spokesman for Politico told.
Michael Gahler, spokesperson for the European group’s European group’s foreign policy in the European Parliament, warned of such a decision by the White House.
“We are deeply concerned about the fact that the Trump administration seems willing to abandon international law, to betray Ukraine, to grant impunity from Russia and to do business with Putin,” he said. “A new German government would not allow Nord Stream either to be reactivated. We will not make the same mistake twice. ”
