Watch: police respond to the fiery scene after small planes crash in Philadelphia

Friday evening, a small medical transport plane crashed in several buildings in the northeast of Philadelphia, fixing houses and vehicles in flames and injuring people on the ground.

The plane had been on a medical transport mission, transporting a patient child and his mother, and four crew members.

“We know that there will be a loss,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at a press conference on the scene of the accident, calling him a “horrible aviation catastrophe”.

Videos of the online incident show that the plane descends quickly and triggers a huge fireball.

The six people on board were Mexican, the country’s foreign ministry said on x. The plane went to Springfield, Missouri.

A spokesman for the University Hospital-Jeana temple in Philadelphia said he had treated six people injured on the ground during the accident.

Three have been treated and released, while the details are not yet known about the state of the other three.

The plane left the northeast of Philadelphia Airport around 6:07 p.m., it crashed less than four miles (6.4 km) a few moments later, reported the American BBC CBS partner .

Fire managers said several houses caught fire in the Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard region, CBS reported.

A man who spoke with CBS said he was driving in the region when he heard a swirling sound and then a strong explosion.

“Everyone just started screaming,” he said.

Another witness told local media that the explosion “illuminated the whole sky”.

“I just saw a plane hit the building essentially and it exploded. The sky turned and I stopped and basically it was really bad here”, the witness said wpvi-tvDescribing the accident as a feeling of earthquake.
