A Mariachi rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner divided fans ahead of Canelo Alvarez’s Cinco de Mayo showdown with Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.

Ahead of the undisputed middleweight title fight between two of Mexico’s best in Las Vegas, organizers stayed true to their country’s heritage by playing a Mariachi the American national anthem.

The trio of Brenden Perez, Ramiro Oseguera and Daniel Ochoa performed the anthem without vocals. A bass and guitar accompanied while a violin played the melody.

The release divided fans, with most of the X users who joined the discussion seeming pleased with the unique release.

“Did a Mariachi band just sing the best American national anthem I’ve ever heard at a sporting event?” one user wrote.

Some social media users criticized the version, calling it “pure mockery.”

“I don’t know about y’all, but that mariachi rendition of the American national anthem was pretty cool,” another added.

However, others, while apparently fans of the rendition themselves, seem to suggest that some Americans would not be terribly impressed to hear their national anthem performed in this style.

“We’re getting a mariachi version of the American national anthem,” added another. “It gets a roar of approval here. I love it, but it can trigger some kind of MDR.

“Somewhere a proud MAGA boy is losing his shit to the mariachi national anthem during the Canelo fight, I love it,” chimed in a third.

“Someone check the white people, they just performed the United States national anthem using a mariachi, btw, it was fire.” #CaneloMunguia’, another chimed in.

Meanwhile, another posted: “Watching the intro to #CaneloMungia and out of nowhere the American national anthem was played to me, Mexican Mariachi…and it’s slaaaaaapppedd shit.” watch out for your local white friends, y’all.

However, others emerged as fans of the version, while some remained divided.

Conversely, others were unimpressed, with one fan writing: “Yes lol, WTF was that.”

“F*** this mariachi Star Spangled Banner,” one social media user fumed. “I love Mexico and Mexicans, but this interpretation was pure mockery.

“You’ll never hear something like Charlie Daniels playing the Mexican national anthem with a violin or some shit.” #CaneloMunguia.’

‘Yo, what was that American national anthem mariachi style?’ another disagreed.

Many were unimpressed, others seemed surprised or shocked.

Alvarez then held off his fiery challenger, proving to be the strongest and most effective boxer to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship, winning by unanimous decision to hand Munguia his first defeat.

Tim Cheatham scored the fight 117-110, David Sutherland 116-111 and Steve Weisfeld 115-112.

Alvarez (61-2-2) overcame a slow start to dominate Munguia (43-1) in front of a crowd of 17,492. The champion took full control after knocking down Munguia in the fourth round.

The build-up to the fight was unusually polite, with both fighters saying they were proud to represent Mexico on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
