Bill Russell, a basketball legend who made history with the Boston Celtics, has died, his family announced Sunday. He was 88 years old.

Russell’s career spanned more than 60 years, from college basketball to leading the Celtics to 11 championships, to becoming the first black head coach of a North American professional sports team, to his social justice initiatives.
