A historic six-story South End townhouse with a rooftop hot tub is a remarkable Boston getaway, according to US News and World Report.

Clarendon Square was named the No. 1 Bed & Breakfast in Boston in the publication’s inaugural Best Bed & Breakfast rankings, released earlier this month. U.S. News evaluated more than 250 bed and breakfasts, inns and small hotels in 17 cities and towns for the rankings. Boston was one of the top destinations based on travelers’ interest in bed and breakfasts.

Clarendon Square, built in 1867 for a Boston merchant and his family, has been painstakingly renovated by owners Stephen Gross and Bobby Ciletti. They modernized the building while preserving architectural elements such as doors, moldings and ceiling medallions.

“B&Bs typically offer a unique atmosphere, free breakfast and an authentic cultural experience at their given location,” Zach Watson, senior travel editor at U.S. News, said in a statement.

Clarendon Square’s luxury accommodations on West Brookline Street are “quietly tucked away,” as the website says, but also convenient for exploring downtown Boston and the Back Bay.

“We believe our success comes from our passion for hospitality and travel,” the owners wrote on their blog. “Even though our inn and our town are historic, our mindset is always focused on the future. »

Clarendon Square offers two types of rooms: a Deluxe Queen Room and a Deluxe Suite. Each room features premium Frette linens and bathrobes, designer bedding, and Molton Brown toiletries.

Queen rooms feature a seating area and private tiled and marble bathroom. The apartment-sized suite offers guests 720 square feet of living space on a private floor with a bathroom featuring a two-person soaking tub and a dual-head walk-in shower.

“We’re always looking to improve the guest experience, whether that’s renovating our bathrooms, adding new technology, sourcing new furniture and decor from our own travels, or refreshing the property with new touches and amenities,” the owners wrote on their blog. “We want our guests to return to a familiar and intimate place, while keeping them curious about what we do next.”

The rooftop jacuzzi, offering city views, is open all year round, 24 hours a day. Guests can bask in the sun during the day and relax with a bottle of champagne and a lit view of Boston at night.

“With stunning views of the Back Bay hotels, downtown Boston and the South End, you will truly be captivated,” according to the website.

The hotel currently does not serve breakfast, according to Ciletti. Since the pandemic, owners have supported neighborhood restaurants by referring diners there for breakfast.

“We find that our guests enjoy lounging in the room and don’t feel pressured to get up in the morning at a certain time,” Gross wrote in an email.

However, each room offers “morning bites” like oatmeal cups, Belgian waffles and granola bars, according to Ciletti, as well as La Colombe coffee and a selection of Rishi teas. Cookies and bananas are also available daily.

Clarendon Square has received national recognition and awards by Forbes, Condé Nast TravelerAnd The New York Times.
