A kite surfer is shocked when the ocean creature jumps from the waves. Australian video shows near accident

When spending time on the ocean, it is safe to assume that the animals that call the sea home will stay in the water.

This was not the case for an Australian kite surfer.

While catching wind off the western coast of Australia, the surfer spotted something dark moving underwater near his board.

As it gets closer, the outline of a large dark ray appears beneath the surface, as shown in a TikTok video posted by jasonbater179 on March 8.

Then the stingray rushes to the surface, explodes from the water and flaps its fins in the air, the video shows.

“Watch his tail,” the surfer captioned the video.

When the surfer passes the flying ray, the tip of its long tail comes dangerously close.

Then it falls back into the water, and both the surfer and the stingray continue to enjoy the ocean.

“He (was) trying to show you,” one person commented on TikTok.

“I’ll show you how to do it,” said another.

The ray is probably a mobula ray and not a stingray. They are known for leaping into the air and showing off their agility, according to the British Natural History Museum.

This behavior may be a way to communicate, a display during mating, or a way to hunt in groups, but no one knows for sure, the museum says.
