A key to consuming sugar could increase your risk of diabetes: Sciencelert

Not all sweet treats have struck in the same way. According to new research, the release of a soft drink can be worse for your metabolic health than nibbling a soft snack.

The systematic journal brings together health data of more than half a million adults around the world, and it notes that each additional portion of a sugary drink or fruit juice per day is associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

To find out more, Della Corte and his colleagues compared the risk of diabetes from daily doses of fructose, sucrose, free sugars (which are natural, as in honey), added sugars and total sugars. They also focused on sugary drinks, such as carbonated drinks or sports drinks and fruit juices.


The risk of developing type 2 diabetes differs according to the sugar consumed. The contributions of sucrose and total sugar were associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, while no association was found for added sugar and fructose.


However, other sugars were linked to the opposite result. Each additional daily portion of a soft drink has increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 25% in this study. In addition, each additional portion of fruit juice has increased the risk by 5%.


It was true even after the researchers adjusted themselves for a person’s body mass and the energy intake.


This does not mean that each time you drink a soda box, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases by 25%. These are relative risks, not absolute risks.


Based on these figures, if you had a reference risk of developing diabetes which was 10%, for example, having four sodas per day would increase this risk to 20%.


The study highlights a worrying correlation, but additional research is necessary to understand why fruit juice can be more damaging to body metabolism than say, a real fruit.


“The high sugar content and the lack of fiber in fruit juice are similar to sugary drinks, making it a bad substitute for whole fruit, which provide a higher fiber content to support better regulation of blood sugar”. explain the authors.
