The Vikings of Minnesota would like to re-Sim Darnold, but will not use the franchise tag to keep it, several reports said on Monday.
The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is Tuesday at 4 p.m. HE. If the Vikings used the franchise label on Darnold, his salary would be guaranteed for $ 40.2 million for the coming season.
The Vikings and Darnold would have remained under discussion on a possible contract.
Darnold, 27, landed in Minnesota last winter on a one year free agreement, projected like the Vikings temporary quarterrier, especially after the team later used a first-round choice on QB JJ McCarthy.
Darnold won the quarter position in the training camp, during which McCarthy suffered an injury at the end of the knee on the right.
In the regular season, Darnold turned out to be a revelation, leading the Vikings to a file of 14-3 while filling 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards and 35 affected, all heights in career. He was intercepted 12 times.

The surprise season has earned Darnold a selection of the pro bowl, and he finished 10th in the MVP vote. The Vikings lost 27-9 against the Los Angeles Rams in an eliminatory match in the first round.
Selected third in the general classification by jets during the 2018 draft in southern California, Darnold had a record of 13-25 as a three-year starter in New York.
He compiled an 8-9 record for the Carolina Panthers in 2021 and ’22 combined, then saw a limited action as a backup for the 49ers of San Francisco in 2023.
Overall, Darnold has a record of 35-38 as a starter. In 83 NFL games (73 departures), it connected on 61.2% of its passes for 16,383 yards with 98 affected and 68 interceptions.
There are several quarter-back posts in the NFL as it is. The New York giants are one and considered Aaron Rodgers for the role.
Las Vegas raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans are also looking for a new signal caller.
