A huge study reveals where the drop comes from, and that’s not what we thought: Scienceatt

Gout is often associated with drinking too much or not eating healthy enough, but research suggests that genetics play a factor in the development of the arthritis condition than you thought before.

A recent study, carried out by an international team of scientists, examined the genetic data collected from 2.6 million people in 13 different cohorts of DNA data. This number included 120,295 people with a “widespread drop”.

By comparing the genetic codes of people with gouts against people without, the team found 377 specific DNA regions where there were specific variations on the condition – of which 149 had not been previously linked to gout.

Although the lifestyle and environmental factors are certainly still at stake, the results suggest that genetics plays a major role in determining someone’s desire – and researchers think that there can also be more unprecedented genetic links.

“Goutte is a chronic disease with a genetic basis and is not the victim’s fault – the myth according to which gout is caused by the lifestyle or the diet must be broken,” said Epidemiologist Tony Merriman of the University of Otago in New Zealand, when the study was published last year.

Gout settles when there are high levels of uric acid in the blood, which then form net crystalline needles in the joints. When the body’s immune system begins to attack these crystals, this leads to significant pain and discomfort.

Genetics is important at each stage of this process, suggest the researchers. In particular, this affects the probability that the body’s immune system attacks the crystals and, in the way in which uric acid is transported around the body.

Gout can come and go, but there are available treatments – and the authors behind the study think that false ideas can discourage people from these treatments. This is a real problem with the cases of the climb and climbing state.

“This widespread myth causes shame in people with gout, making some people more likely to suffer in silence and not going to see the doctor to get a preventive medication that lowers the urate in the blood and will prevent his pain,” said Merriman.

In addition to giving us a better understanding of the causes of gout, the study gives scientists more options to explore with regard to treatments, in particular in terms of management of the body’s immune response to the construction of uric acid. In fact, existing drugs could be reused for this work.

There are certain limits to the study: the majority of data came from people of European ancestry, and certain files were based on the self-declaration of gout rather than on a clinical diagnosis. Nevertheless, this gives us a much better feeling of health problems that have been afflicting people for centuries.

“We hope that over time, better and more accessible treatments will be available with the new targets we have identified,” said Merriman. “Gouther deserves more health expenditure resources and greater prioritization in the health system.”

Research was published in Nature genetics.
