A homicide suspect allegedly assaulted a Colorado Springs officer and stole a patrol vehicle.

A homicide suspect allegedly assaulted an officer in Colorado Springs on Friday night before stealing the officer’s patrol car and leading police on a chase that ended in an accident and his arrest. The assaulted officer fired at least one shot at the suspect.

The incident unfolded around 9:50 p.m. when officers responded to the 200 block of East Arvada Street following a report of a man wielding a knife, police said.

One victim told police that a man asked him to come with him and when the victim refused, the man pointed a knife at him. The victim managed to escape and called 911.

As officers were en route to the scene of the 911 call, the suspect entered an apartment “where a homicide occurred,” police said. The suspect left the apartment and encountered the arriving first officer, assaulting him. The officer shot the suspect who got into the officer’s marked patrol vehicle and sped south on Arvada and onto Interstate 25 southbound.

Multiple officers pursued the suspect and the stolen police vehicle, which had multiple crashes before breaking down on I-25 near South Academy Boulevard, where the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for injuries. A homicide investigation and a police investigation into the shootings are ongoing. Several road accidents are also being investigated.

The officer suffered minor injuries and is on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy. Police did not say whether any motorists were injured in the I-25 crashes.
