HARTS LOCATION, NH (AP) — A hiker died 300 feet after falling from a cliff atop Mount Willard in Crawford Notch, officials said.
The hiker and his wife were taking photos late Saturday morning before they heard her husband calling and turned to see him fall off the edge of the cliff, New Hampshire Fish and Game said.
Mountain rescue service technicians had to rappel in freezing conditions to retrieve the hiker’s body from the cliff face, and it took hours to move the body to the trailhead parking lot, said officials.
State officials did not immediately release the name of the victim or spouse.
With an elevation of around 2,865 feet, Mount Willard sits in the center of Crawford Notch and its summit offers stunning views of the area.
