ANDRE ROMANO: The new “Yahoo News/YouGov” poll shows that a clear majority of Americans and registered voters want Congress to pass legislation restoring the protections of “Roe v. Wade” and keeping abortion as legal as it was for 50 years nationwide. This is the highest level of support we saw in our poll and may reflect developments in the United States. This follows Arizona’s reinstatement of an 1864 law that bans abortion in almost all cases.

This Arizona law is extremely unpopular with Americans. 57% of Americans oppose its reinstatement. Only 25% are in favor of his return. This highlights how delicate the politics of abortion are for Republicans and for Donald Trump.

KAMALA HARRIS: Former President Donald Trump did this.

ANDRE ROMANO: What we need to watch here is the reaction of the Republicans. Donald Trump has tried to distance himself from laws like Arizona’s.

DONALD ATTOUT: The judge made a decision, but it will be modified by the government. They are going to change that. I don’t agree with this.

ANDRE ROMANO: But there are Republican lawmakers in the United States and Washington who want a near-total ban on abortion. This is therefore a conflict within the Republican Party as the 2024 elections approach.

MIKE JOHNSON: Look, I’m pro-life. You are pro-life. This is our belief. Our party has always been pro-life. November we have a large selection.

ANDRE ROMANO: Joe Biden’s position is that Congress should pass legislation codifying chicken egg protections.

PRESIDENT BIDEN: If you, the American people, send me to Congress to support the right to choose, I promise you that I will restore “Roe v. Wade” as the law of the land.

ANDRE ROMANO: It’s very popular with voters. Donald Trump’s position is that this should be left to the states.

DONALD ATTOUT: Some will be more conservative than others. And that’s what they will be.

ANDRE ROMANO: But when voters see what each state has done and will do in the future, bringing back laws like the one passed in Arizona to ban abortion, they don’t like it.
