A Florida teacher accused of having sex with a student had already received several warnings

A former Florida gym teacher was repeatedly warned about his inappropriate behavior with students before being arrested for a sex crime in February.

Arin Hankerd, a former teacher at Atlantic High School, was arrested Feb. 10 for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old student in January. Hankerd resigned before he could be fired.

But newly revealed school investigations show that Hankerd’s inappropriate behavior with students has been documented repeatedly.

In March 2020, Hankerd received a “warning letter” after officials discovered he spoke with a female student about smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol.

Hankerd was also charged with touching a female student’s thigh and asking for her number, but officials concluded there was insufficient evidence to discipline him.

The football coach received a second warning letter in October 2021 after making inappropriate remarks about the appearances of two female students. Hankerd was then told to be careful about interactions with female students.

His third warning letter came after Hankerd allegedly asked a student about her boyfriend and his belly button piercing, in addition to grabbing his arm during gym class.

Hankerd previously taught at Mainland High School and Father Lopez Catholic High School, according to the Port Orange Police Department. He worked at Atlantic High School for two years before being incarcerated in Volusia County Jail.
