A farmer is being questioned by police after one man was shot dead and another seriously injured following a suspected burglary at a remote Peak District farm.

A farmer was being questioned by police this evening after a man was shot dead and another seriously injured following a suspected burglary.

Officers were called early this morning to reports of a break-in at a remote farm in the Peak District.

They found a man fatally injured inside the property and another seriously injured on the road outside at around 1.20am. Both had been shot.

Officers sealed off a large section of a country lane, in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, and launched a murder investigation.

The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment and arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary. A third suspect was also arrested this afternoon on suspicion of the same offence, after being stopped by police in a vehicle on the A6, near Chapel-en-le-frith.

A fourth man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He remains in police custody and has been identified locally but the Mail is not identifying him.

Neighbors said the incident appeared to have been a “burglary gone wrong.”

A woman who lives near the farm said: “The farm is in a secluded location, quite deep in the valley and off the main road.

“I suspect this was an opportunistic burglary gone wrong.”

Another local said: “It’s a small community, everyone knows everyone here. »

Another woman added: “Obviously it’s shocking when something like this happens on your doorstep. People called me to ask if I was okay. It’s normally a sleepy little town.

Chief Superintendent Dave Kirby, of Derbyshire Police, said he believed the incident was a “targeted attack” and there was no wider risk to the public.

“We appreciate the impact of this incident on this small rural community and would like to thank local residents for their assistance with this investigation so far,” he said.

“We are aware that there has been speculation locally about this and, although we are in the early stages of the investigation, we believe this to be a targeted incident.” At this point, we do not believe there is any greater risk to the public.

“Residents in the area will see an increased police presence in the area for some time as investigations continue and we will provide additional updates as soon as we are able.

“In the meantime, I would ask anyone with information to please contact us, in complete confidentiality.”
