A family makes tofu their business in a state known for its barbecues

Houston, TX — Tofu spring rolls and tofu tamales are products of Banyan Foods, the first tofu company in Texas.

“We’re from a state primarily known for barbecue and meat production,” said co-owner Gary Chiu.

The company was founded in 1978, shortly after the Chiu family immigrated to Houston from Taiwan.

As the company grew, so did their relationships with their employees.

“We are 30% Latino owned, I like to tell people that if employees stay long enough we give them ownership shares in the company,” Chiu said.
