A chance meeting with Bill Gates opened a fortune for an Indian tea seller

Dolly Chaiwala, a tea seller whose distinctive style caught the eye of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the world’s seventh richest man, is now a guest at many events, talk shows and other public platforms.

A food blogger, who wanted to invite her on his show, revealed how demanding Dolly Chaiwala was in accepting such invitations.

“Do you know how much this guy Dolly Chaiwala is asking? 2,000 dinars. So Rs 5 lakhs. That’s about 2,000 or 2,500 Kuwaiti dinars. That’s not all. 2,500 Kuwaiti dinars, plus one more person to accompany him, a 4-5 star hotel booking. He literally told me. He wasn’t talking to me, his manager was talking to me… And that’s for one day,” said the food blogger whose online handle is AK Food Vlog. The video has been viewed over 18.7 million times in the first 24 hours.

During his visit to India in February, Bill Gates, who is worth an estimated $137 billion, was so fascinated by Dolly’s tea-making and serving that the tech mogul posted a video of his experience online. The man serving the tea had no idea what was at stake.

“I was completely unaware. I thought he was from a foreign country and hence I should serve him tea,” he told ANI after returning to Nagpur. However, this chance encounter opened the doors to a whole new world of opportunities for the humble tea seller.
