A suspect is in detention after a shooting in Baldwin Park, California, killed a police officer and hospitalized another Saturday evening, said Sheriff officials of the County of Los Angeles.
The agents responded to a call for shots and an individual down shortly after 7 p.m. in the 4200 block on Filhurst avenue, officials said. The call said that someone was shooting with a rifle.
A second victim, an unidentified adult man, was found dead at the scene of what officials call a “double murder”. The authorities think they have recovered the weapon.
The Sheriff department takes the main lead in the investigation, said Sheriff Robert Luna.
Luna said that an adult male suspect would be the person behind the officer’s shots and the victim found on the scene. He would have first shot the officers and was then struck by gunshots, added the sheriff. The unidentified suspect was then transported to hospital in a stable state, officials said.
“Our officer was an incredible man,” Baldwin Park police chief Robert Lopez said early Sunday. The officials said that the name of the officer would not yet be released because they were unable to inform all family members at the time of the press conference.
Lopez said the fell officer was a passionate snowboarder and a fan of the Los Angeles dodgers, going to the stadiums across the country to see the team play.
The other officer who responded to the scene was hospitalized and is in a stable state.
