A 17-year-old boy drowns while swimming in open water as Britain swelters in the heat and the weekend is set to be the hottest of the year so far.

A teenager drowned while swimming in open water on the hottest day of the year, as temperatures soared to 27C.

Ronalds Abele, 17, got into trouble on the quayside in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, early yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at 1.45pm, but he was pronounced dead at Northampton General Hospital after being airlifted from the scene.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: ‘This is a tragic incident and Ronald’s family have asked for privacy at this very distressing time.’
