President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Walmart should “eat prices” after the retail giant suggested that he may have to increase prices in the midst of the upheavals caused by the president’s trade policies.
“Walmart should stop trying to blame the prices as the reason for the price increase in the whole chain. Walmart won billions of dollars last year, much more than expected,” Trump said on his Truth social platform.
“Between Walmart and China, they should, as they say,” eat the prices “and not charge customers appreciated anything. I will look, and your customers too !!! he added.
Trump’s response occurred after Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, said in a profit call Thursday that “higher prices would cause higher prices” even with the administration temporarily reducing prices for a myriad of countries in recent weeks.
During the call for profits, Walmart’s financial director John David Rainey said that higher prices were probably in reserve for business customers in the coming weeks.
“There are certain articles, certain categories of goods, that we are depending on the import of other countriesAnd the prices of these things will probably increase, and it’s not good for consumers, “said Rainey.
In the first quarter of 2025, Walmart declared revenues of $ 165.6 billion and its sales sales increased by 21%.
About a third of the articles that Walmart sells in the United States come from other countries, especially from Canada, China, India, Mexico and Vietnam.
Last month, Trump increased prices on most Chinese products at 145%, but earlier this week, the rate was temporarily reduced to a basic line of 30% as part of a 90 -day break on higher prices. Trump said the prices could become “considerably higher” if the two countries do not forge a commercial agreement.
