China exports increased sharply in April despite Donald Trump’s “release” rates on expeditions to the United States, strengthening Beijing’s hand before crucial trade negotiations due to this weekend.

The high performance has occurred while Chinese companies have diverted trade flows to Southeast Asia, Europe and other destinations following the taxation of high-formal-forming prohibitive prices between the two largest economies in the world.

Exports increased by $ 8.1% in relation to a year earlier, Chinese customs said on Friday, beating analysts’ forecasts in a 1.9% growth reuters survey, but slowing 12.4% growth in March, when the figures were recorded by exporters seeking to take an advance on the expected prices UNITED STATES.

Imports decreased by 0.2% in April, the third consecutive month of decline, which will increase concerns about the emerging trade surpluses of China, which are the cause of most of its tensions with the United States.

“It seems worse for the United States in commercial discussions,” Lynn Song, chief economist of Greater China, added, adding that the contraction of Chinese imports seemed to go to the detriment of American exports to the country.

Heron Lim, an economist at Moody’s Analytics, said that, although China trade with the United States fell 21% in annual shift in April, it increased equal percentage with the Southeast Asian nations and 8% with the EU.

“The most important increases in outgoing expeditions have gone to Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam,” said Lim.

The high performance promises to put pressure on American commercial negotiators who are preparing to meet their Chinese counterparts for commercial talks in Geneva from Saturday.

Treasury secretary Scott Bessent and trade representative Jamieson Greer will represent the United States, while China has declared that its delegation would be led by Vice-President He Lifeng, his best economic official.

US President Donald Trump last month increased prices on most Chinese products to 145%, and said he would impose new samples on small value for the country. Beijing responded with 125%prices.

Trump has also initially levied punishing prices from Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries that have accumulated enormous trade surpluses with the United States. Many companies have built manufacturing bases in these countries such as an alternative to China.

Trump then announced a 90-day break on the prices of the “Liberation Day” while waiting for negotiations with most countries, with the exception of China, reopening of the possibility that exporters channel their goods in the United States through Southeast Asia.

Reservations for Chinese expeditions to the United States fell between 30 and 50%, Jens Eskellund, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce said on Thursday. But he said that reservations to the rest of the world are increasing.

“Chinese exports to the rest of Asia seem to occur particularly strongly but also to the Middle East and to a certain extent also Europe,” he said. “Of course, China is impacted … But we see to some extent other markets be able to collect some of the goods that do not go to the United States.“”

China’s trade surplus with the United States amounted to $ 20.46 billion in April and $ 96.2 billion in total. But expeditions to the United States decreased by 17.6% compared to the previous month, indicating that China had increased trade with alternative markets.

In a press release analyzing Chinese trade in terms of Renminbi in the past four months, customs officials noted that trade had increased with countries in Southeast Asia, EU and along the Belt and Road initiative, the Beijing Infrastructure Infrastructure Drive. Trade with the United States, he added, had decreased.

Lu Daliang, a customs spokesperson, said that “global cooperation in China with neighboring countries continued to deepen and that economic and commercial relations are closer and closer”, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
