Legendary football coach Arsene Wenger wants the offside rule to change in order to restore an advantage for the attacker, who was deleted by the introduction of the assistant video referee (VAR).
The former boss of Arsenal, Wenger, who is also the leader in FIFA global development, said that if part of the body of an attacker was in accordance with the last defender of the outside field, he had to be considered on the side and not offside.
Currently, an attacker is reported offside if part of the body, outside the hands and arms, is ahead of the last defender.
Wenger wants the rule of offside to change
Wenger said that such a change was brought after the 1990 World Cup produced very few goals. However, the change was compromised by Var. During the 1990 World Cup, an attacker was considered offside if he was level with the last defender.
“It was in 1990 after the World Cup in Italy when no goal scored,” Wenger in BeIN Sports told. “We decided that there was no more offside when you are on the same line of the defender.
“If in doubt, doubt benefits the attacker. This means that when there is a fraction, the attacker obtained the advantage.
“With Var, this advantage has disappeared and for many people, it’s frustrating.”
It should be noted that the 1990 World Cup had an average of 2.21 goals per game, the lowest among all World Cups.
Wenger also revealed that the trials for the new change in the Hors-Jeu rule are currently taking place in football of young Italian and a final decision on the issue will be made in 2026.
Until 2026, more trials on the change of rule will be carried out. These trials have recently been approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), football legislators.
