What to know about Project Kuiper, Amazon’s satellite Internet Venture

Amazon seeks to extend its already giant scope with Project Kuiper, an Internet satellite company. Kuiper will compete directly with Starlink de Spacex, promoting the billionaires Jeff Bezos and the rivalry of the decades of Elon Musk.

The $ 10 billion company aims to bring the internet to large bands to tens of millions and, if successful, could support some of the other Amazon objectives. The project takes its name from the Kuiper belt, part of the solar system after the eight main planets. Kuiper obtained launches from various aerospace companies, including Blue Origin, which belongs to Bezos, founder of Amazon and executive president.

Here is everything that to know about the foundation, operations and the project of Project Kuiper with Starlink.

Kuiper Foundation and Technology Project

Kuiper promises to provide wide -band internet access to tens of millions of people, especially those of poorly served areas, says Amazon. The company claims that its services will help close the digital divide, as satellite Internet provides faster connections to rural communities.

Amazon plans to launch possibly more than 3,200 satellites via Kuiper, which is based in Washington. Kuiper has three main components, according to Amazon: field infrastructure, satellites and client terminals.

The terrestrial infrastructure connects the satellite and internet network. Satellites, which are in low orbit, transmit data between land infrastructure and users. Each user installs an outdoor antenna, or a “client terminal”, which connects to the satellite and provides WiFi.

Kuiper will work with Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud of the company and the basis of its profits. Floor services will connect with AWS, which means that Amazon could have the whole server infrastructure to the satellite in Space and have more control over prices, quality and scope.

It’s not just AWS – Kuiper also has the potential to work with and stimulate other Amazon services. Alexa, for example, is based on an internet connection. Kuiper could bring the voice assistant to people who are currently lacking in the Internet. The same goes to bring the Internet to new potential members of Amazon Prime and general customers.

Chronology and launch plans

Amazon started looking for Kuiper in 2018, and the Federal Communications Commission granted a license to start sending satellites in space in July 2020. The initial launch by Kuiper satellite prototypes was planned for the end of 2022, but was delayed when Amazon changed the rocket delivery system. Finally, Amazon sent its first two satellites Kuiper in orbit in October 2023. These satellites were used to test parts of the Kuiper system before deployment The entire network.

On April 28, 2025, Amazon launched 27 satellites and the company said it had established communications with all. A rocket by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture Boeing and Lockheed Martin, sent the satellites to space. Amazon said it has obtained more than 80 launches with a range of rocket companies in addition to ULA, including Blue Origin, SpaceX and the French company Arianespace.

When he approved Kuiper’s plans, the FCC said that Amazon had to deploy at least half of his satellites in late July 2026.

Kuiper Internet will be available for customers before the end of 2025, if the launches remain on time and everything will plan. The project is extremely expensive – Amazon has invested $ 10 billion in Kuiper – but could also be quite profitable.

Unlike the main Amazon electronic commerce activities, which have thin margins, wide -band services could have 80%margin, previously reported Bi.

Project Kuiper vs Starlink

Kuiper de Bezos and Starlink from Musk have the same basic goal: to provide a quick -wide satellite internet, mainly to people in distant regions. The two services oblige users to install antennas.

The Musk’s Starlink is a long way ahead of almost all respects. As Kuiper launched his first 27 satellites, Starlink had thousands of satellites in space and millions of users. His web service is booming and Musk said he hoped to form a constellation of 42,000 satellites. Service also has geopolitical importance; Musk sent thousands of Starlink terminals to Ukraine during the first days of his war with Russia, for example.

Large strip service is a large part of SpaceX’s results, with a turnover planned for the 2025 financial year of $ 12.3 billion.

While Kuiper runs to make up for Starlink, the billionaire space race will continue to take a new technological and global meaning here on Earth.
