Brazilian police said on Sunday that they had foiled a plot to explode explosives during a Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro, an event that, according to some estimates, attracted more than two million people.
Rio de Janeiro civilian police made the announcement one day after Lady Gaga’s free concert on Copacabana beach. The show went without disruption, and a Pop Star representative later told the Associated Press that she had learned the threat of media reports.
Police said the group behind the Enluled plot had recruited potential participants, including adolescents, to carry out attacks with improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails. He said that the group’s objectives included children, adolescents and members of the LGBTQ community.
The group leader was arrested in the southern state of the Rio Grande Do Sul for illegal possession of a firearm, and a teenager was arrested for storing juvenile pornography, police announced in the announcement. He was not immediately clear if one or the other person had been charged.
The representatives of Lady Gaga, a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights, did not respond to an investigation on Sunday evening.
His show during the weekend was part of Rio de Janeiro’s strategy to attract major acts to play huge free concerts on Copacabana beach. Madonna played one last year.
