“Whoever tries to enter Germany illegally should expect to be arrested on the German border from May 6,” strengthened Thorsten Frei, the new chief of the Chancellery, a powerful role similar to a chief of staff, strengthened earlier this week.
When asked if Poland would accept the return of asylum seekers, TombiĆski stressed that Warsaw supports its “obligations under EU legislation”. He explained that this includes the reform of the common European asylum system. Under the CEA, countries cannot reject asylum seekers at their internal borders.
A spokesperson for the Austrian Ministry of the Interior told Politico: “We are convinced that the actions of the German authorities at the internal borders of the EU comply with the legal system.” The spokesman added: “The European Court of Justice has judged that informal yields are not legally possible when an asylum application is presented.”
Merz – whose main campaign promises also included commitments to improve relations with German neighbors (including Poland), and to take a more proactive position on the European scene – should go to Warsaw on Wednesday, where he will have to defend his difficult border policy.
