The English Premier League announced on Tuesday the opening of an office in Mumbai, India. With its new office in the financial capital of India, one of the most followed football leagues in the world, the EPL aims to improve its commitment “with local fans, partners and the promotion of football” in India.
The EPP already enjoys a significant presence in India with its skills program in partnership with the British Council. The skills program was launched in 2007 and aims to develop the workforce of community football in India.
Over the past 18 years, the program has been active in more than 18 Indian States, supporting more than 7,300 coaches, referees and educators, benefiting 124,000 young people.
Premier league opens its duties in Mumbai
At an elite level, the Premier League has been working in close collaboration with the Indian Super League (ISL) since 2014, which has seen the knowledge and expertise in the Premier League sharing in all areas of the elite game, including governance, young people, coaches and referees. In 2019, the Premier League launched the next Gen Gen Cup – an elite international youth tournament organized in collaboration with the ISL and reliance Foundation to support the development of youth talents. The sixth edition of the tournament will take place in Mumbai in May 2025 and will see the youth teams ISL confront the U19 teams of the Premier League clubs.
The Premier League India office will underpin the league’s commitment to support the development of football through India at the level of the elite and the base thanks to a reinforced collaboration with the football authorities and the guiding bodies. The office will also focus on creating more ways to engage directly with fans in the region through events and partnership activities, working closely with the longtime dissemination partner of the League, Jiostar.
The director general of the Premier League, Richard Masters, said: “We and our clubs have a fantastic and competent fans in India, and we know that football continues to gain popularity. We are proud of our long -standing commitment in India, having worked to offer community football programs for 18 years and, more recently, our partnership with the Indian Super League.
“The opening of this office marks an important step for the Premier League. This will allow us to operate more effectively locally while we rely on our existing work to establish more ways to strengthen our relationship with fans, Jiostar and other partners. We look forward to the opportunities it will create in the region. ”
In 2019, the Premier League opened its first international office in Singapore, mainly created to combat the hacking of the content of the Premier League and support distribution partners. In July 2023, the League opened its office in New York to continue to develop fans’ engagement opportunities in the United States, working in close collaboration with its longtime dissemination partner NBC Sports. In October 2024, the Premier League announced the opening of an office in Beijing to continue relying on work in the region to hire fans and partners, and support the development of the game locally.
