The Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 ended on Monday with a sparkling ceremony in Madrid, which have attended some of the biggest names in the world of sport, notably Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Simon Biles, Luis Figo and many others.
It turned out to be an even larger night for American Gymnast Biles, which was appointed Sportsswoman of the year, while the Swedish Vaulter Mondo Duplantis captured the honor of men.
Biles, which won gold medals in the team, the competitions of all anounds and jumps, as well as an exercise in the ground at the Paris 2024 Games to finish a triumphant return three years after having removed events at the Tokyo Olympic Games, won the Laureus prize for the fourth time.
This raised the record held by tennis Great and the American compatriot Serena Williams.
“I am so happy to be here in Madrid and to receive my fourth prize Laureus,” said Biles.
“I have won this award for the first time in 2017 and Laureus has been part of my story since.
The winner of last year, Novak Djokovic, gave Duplantis his first prize Laureus after being nominated in each of the last three years, becoming only the second athletics athlete to obtain it after Usain Bolt.
Largely considered to be one of the greatest pole vaultres of all time, Duplantis won a second Olympic gold medal consecutive in Paris, breaking his own world record for the ninth time, before breaking it once again during the meeting of the Silesia Diamond League the following month.
“I am incredibly honored to have won my first Laureus, this is the ultimate price that we, the athletes, want to win. I know because it is the fourth time that I have been nominated – and it proves that it is more difficult to win a Laureus than an Olympic gold medal,” joked Duplantis.
The Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the return prize for the year after finishing his inspiring return from fatal injuries to the Paris Games to win the gold medal in the floor competition.
The feeling of football among teenagers Lamine Yamal, who helped Spain win the European championship last year, won the breakthrough of the year, the sixth footballer to win this award.
The nominees Laureus World Sports Awards are selected by the world media, while the winners are determined by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The prices have been awarded each year since 2000.
