The Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., intensified his war against the food industry on Tuesday, declaring that “sugar is a poison”.
Mr. Kennedy’s comment occurred at a highly publicized press conference where he also said that he had “an understanding” with the main food manufacturers to eliminate the oil -based food coloring from their products by 2026.
No one in the food industry has attended the event, and none has publicly accepted the requests of Mr. Kennedy, although the International Dairy Foods Association has committed to eliminating artificial colors in milk cheese and yogurt sold to schools as part of federal programs for lunch and breakfast at the start of the 2026 school year.
However, Mr. Kennedy and his advisers said that each large manufacturer of food products and certain fast food companies had contacted the agency looking for advice.
“In four years, we will have most of these products out of the market, or you will know them when you go to the grocery store,” said Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy’s thrust to bring manufacturers of food products to eliminate the coloring of their products is his first effort to sweep away the reform of the food industry, which he has long blamed for the creation and marketing of ultra-trained food which, according to him, make Americans obese and contribute to a multitude of diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.
