Podcaster and former Fox News host, Steve Hilton, appears as governor in California.
Hilton announced his candidacy on Monday and will launch his campaign with a rally on Tuesday in Huntington Beach and a campaign message which is parallel to its recent book tour: California fails, and democratic supermajure in the state is to blame, he said.
“I just want to ask people to imagine what California would look like after 15 years of unique rule by democrats, even more stagnation and decline. If you look at the state of California today, it is only a disaster on each front,” Hilton told the South California press group in an exclusive interview before its launch of the campaign.
Hilton, 55, is the last to jump in an already crowded area of candidates in the running to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, who is prevented from running again because of the limits of the term.
Republican, Hilton made his politics debut in the United Kingdom. Born in England of Hungary immigrant parents – his father had succeeded as a professional hockey goalkeeper before the couple fled in the 1956 revolution – Hilton began working with the conservative central office in 1990.
He would finally become an advisor close to David Cameron and was recognized to soften the appearance of the Prime Minister. The two have since fallen, in disagreement on Brexit (the term referring to the United Kingdom leaving the European Union) and other political positions.
Hilton compares California today in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and 70s, while called “the sick man from Europe”, a sentence that refers to economic difficulties.
“Honestly, I don’t see how someone could challenge this same kind of characterization from California today, the sick man from America,” said Hilton. “In many ways, California represents the” American dream “and it was just destroyed. We have to recover this. “
Hilton – Author of the recent book “Caliphate: overturning the Ruiin of America’s Worst State” and a self -written “positive populist” – has a list of questions that he wants to see changed in California, questions of affordability to public education.
On the first, Hilton said that the elimination of income taxes on revenues of less than $ 100,000 would be “the simplest and fastest way we can help people to fight financially in California”.
Less than a dozen states – including Florida, Alaska, Tennessee and Texas – have no income tax. And tax experts have found that income tax without higher taxes have other higher taxes (such as sales or goods) and may not provide so many public services.
Hilton also argued for the elimination of regulations which make the construction of housing in the state more difficult, including the CEQA reform, the 1970 law signed by Gov. Ronald Reagan, who forces developers to study the impact of an environment project and try to mitigate any damage. The law has attracted harsh criticism that says it is armed by people opposed to certain developments, regardless of the environmental impact.
Regarding education, Hilton wants to see more transparency and responsibility in the performance of schools and teachers.
“We need a very simple accent to help reward the best teachers, but by removing the worst teachers who drop our children,” he said. “We cannot do it unless we have information on how they behave.”
A red campaign in a blue state
As of February 10 – the last report of the Secretary of State of California – registered democrats represent 45.27% of state -registered voters. Republicans represent 25.22% and no preference for the 22.34% party.
In November, Democrat Adam Schiff defeated a Republican Steve Garvey with 58.9% of the vote to win an open seat in the American Senate.
But Hilton insists that Californian voters are ready to change their leadership in the Director General of the State.
“I think people absolutely cry for positive and practical solutions to their problems,” he said. “They see democratic politicians who have been in charge for so long, obsessed with the ideological agendas which have just aggravated everything. And we must be there with positive, alternative and practical ideas that people can understand will help them in their daily life. ”
This is why Hilton said that he had chosen Huntington Beach from Orange County, who recently elected an all-conservative municipal council, as a launch sample.
“The best managed city in California is led by the Republicans,” said Hilton. “It is a change that occurred very quickly, and no one expected it.
Asked about the rule to a party of Huntington Beach, Hilton underlined a Wallethub poll, which ranked it n ° 65 in total on its list of the best cities in the United States (of note, San Diego is classified n ° 79, Santa Ana n ° 84, Anaheim n ° 104, Bakersfield n ° 110, Riverside no. 133 and Los Angeles No. 139.))
“Something should happen,” he said. “And of course, all other aspects of the government in California are led by Democrats.”
Aside from Hilton, the Sheriff of the County of Riverside, Chad Bianco, is also presented as a republican for the governor in 2026.
The Democratic domain includes the San Diego State senator, Toni Atkins, the former secretary in the United States of Health Xavier Becerra, Hospitality Entrepreneur Stephen Cloobeck, Lieutenant-Governor Eleni Kounalakis, former representative Katie Porter, superintendent of the state of public education Tony Thurmond, Mayor de Los Angeles Antonio Villarosa and former state controller Betty Yee.
Chickens and files
Hilton moved in Silicon Valley with his wife, Rachel Whetstone, former communications chief of Netflix, and their tWo children in 2012, becoming American citizen in 2021.
He founded Crowdpac, a political fundraising tool that focuses on smaller donations. He would later organize a program on Fox News, “The Next Revolution”, and left Crowdpac.
Two years ago, Hilton founded Golden Together, a bipartite effort to tackle a list of problems that includes homelessness, the affordability of housing, commercial climate and forest fire management in California, according to its website.
And if there is one thing that Hilton is just as excited to speak as the state of California, it is his chickens. During an interview on Easter Sunday, Hilton said that he had managed to collect eggs from his chickens, “who was part of our family, as well as our two dogs.”
His favorite chicken was Hermione, who lived for more than 10 years and recently died.
Hilton is also a musical aficionado, reminiscent of a record shop in Brighton with emotion, where he grew up on the southern coast of England.
His first album? “New Gold Dreams” by the Simple Mind Scottish group.
