John Korir of Kenya built his victory in 2025 Boston marathon from zero, surviving at the beginning of fall to finally break the band first at the 129th edition of the historic race.
Korir, 28, added Boston to his list of victories on the world marathon, ending with a time of 2:04:45. This is the second time of the fastest victory of the Boston marathon since Geoffrey Mutai won in 2011 with a time of 2:03:02.
The fact that Korir fought for a victory was particularly notable, since his race began in the worst possible way. Shortly after getting out of the starting line, Korir stumbled and fell (as captured on video and was published on social networks).
But despite his appearance to lose his file in the fall, Korir came back on his feet and quickly caught up the leading pack. He survived early conceptions of other favorites who jockeying for the position and trying to define various tempos.
As he reached Mile 20 (and Mile 21), Korir has unleashed his aggressive attack. Precapitating itself in front of the other favorites, he put a gap between him and the ground. In the two crucial kilometers, he ran 4:41 and 4:40. This period of the course included the feared Heartbreak Hill, which Koir used to help create a separation from the other challengers.
This is another major victory for Korir, who also won the Chicago 2024 marathon in 2:02:44, the eighth fastest time of the marathon in history.
Korir’s brother, Wesley, also won the Boston marathon (doing so in 2012 with a time of 2:12:40). They are officially the first series of brothers to have won in Boston.
