Based on my 30 years of work experience, here are the ways to speed up a promotion.
Document your victories
Whatever industry in which you are, the biggest question you have to ask yourself is: How do you add value to the company? Can you indicate a project that generates income or cost management in one way or another?
It is not enough to work hard or defend yourself – you must also document your victories as often as possible.
If you meet your manager once a quarter and say: “I do a lot of work and I feel ready for a promotion”, it may look like a superficial conversation if you do not have any concrete figures or achievements. If you can indicate evidence of your growth and contributions, you are on a much more stable ground.
Show clear enthusiasm
Another high quality that employers are looking for is eagerness. This does not mean that you have to accept everything or have any limits. But it is always better to say yes to a task – and to ask for adjustments in worktop so that you can achieve it – than to say “no, I am busy”.
In the post-pandemic hybrid world, this can also mean going to the office more. During my career, I was sometimes given opportunities just because I was at my office when an increase needed something. They would point me to me and asked me if I could take the mission when someone else couldn’t. If you work entirely away, you may need to make an effort to find more interactions in person, such as a business on site.

If your current role is to produce mainly something, you may not see many opportunities to direct and go up the career scale. But you can always find new ways to show this initiative.
For example, you can think about a more effective way to produce your product, such as automation of parts of the process. It is not a question of doing more of the same thing; This is how you can get the same result differently. If you can find a successful plan, it shows leadership – and promotion – potential.
This can also apply to your relationship with your manager. If your boss does not plan regular recordings, you can put them on their calendar and create this frame yourself. This ensures you not only to discuss more often and to have more chance of presenting your victories; It also shows that you can take the lead.
Trust
An excellent sign that you could be considered for a promotion is that your boss trusts you to keep them in meetings or projects. This means that they see you as at their level – or close.
One way to fill this gap is to seek ways to collaborate directly with your manager. According to my experience, these are some of the best ways to understand your owner’s work style and what they appreciate. Weekly checks are good, but working on projects together accelerates this relationship.
Think like your boss
Even if your boss is your superior to work, it is not their responsibility to guide your career. You have just as much an equal part, including including the shortcomings you can fill.
Before presenting a promotion, it is important to know what your manager appreciates. For example, you could be super fast and organized, but they want someone more thoughtful and creative. The more you have a relationship, the easier it will be to spot.
The best practice is to always think about your boss’s point of view: how would your promotion benefit them and the company? Can you position promotion as a victory for everyone?
If you can withdraw this burden from their shoulders when you ask for a promotion, you provide a potential solution instead of a complaint. It alone puts you much better to get one.
