Newport Beach, California (KABC) – A motorcyclist killed by Newport Beach police following a confrontation was identified as the brother of a former reality TV star.
Police killed Geoffrey Stirling, 45, from Laguna Niguel, after a traffic stop around 9:15 p.m. Thursday on the Pacific Coast Highway near Hoag Newport Beach.
Stirling is the brother of the former star of “Real Housewives of Orange County” Lydia McLaughlin. Stirling’s family has published a statement calling it “loving son, brother, uncle and friend”.
McLaughlin also published an Instagram statement saying that “his family had undergone an unimaginable loss”.
The shooting occurred after the police said that Stirling became “uncoperative” during a traffic stop and attacked an officer. Stirling would have taken the officer’s taser and tried to use him on the officer before the police pulled him, according to NBPD.
Stirling was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
On Friday, the California Ministry of Justice announced that it would investigate and independently examine the deadly police shooting, as required by the law of the state.
