Atletico Madrid wishes to conclude an agreement for the defender of Tottenham Cristian Romero before the club World Cup, according to a report.
Romero was a key cog in the Spurs team since he joined an initial loan from Atalanta during the 2021-222 season.
The 26 -year -old criticized the club’s hierarchy and recruitment policy in December, stressing a lack of depth to their team compared to the elite of the Premier League, following an overabundance of injuries.
Having missed a certain number of games this season by the injury and the suspension himself, he also praised his national team’s medical staff in comments that were interpreted as a subtle excavation towards his rehabilitation treatment at Spurs.
Last month, Mail Sport reported that Atletico Madrid was monitoring developments with Romero before a potential summer movement.
The Argentinian international is also understood to explore a move while he is trying to play football in the Champions League.

The side of Laliga wants to conclude an agreement of 43 million pounds sterling for Romero before the Club World Cup
Atletico has now made Romero a privileged defensive target and hope to sign it for 43 million pounds sterling, according to The Mirror.
Atletico wants to sign two defenders, including Romero, with the Valencia Mosquera Mosquera also on the restricted list.
CESAR Azpilicueta, Axel Witelda and Reinildo Mandava contracts are finished at the end of June and their participations in the club World Cup, which takes place from June 14 to July 13, are in doubt.
Winner of the World Cup with Argentina, Romero plays under his fifth manager at Spurs, including temporary workers, since his signature for 43 million pounds from Atalanta in 2021.
In December, Romero warned Daniel Levy that the club slipped behind its competitors from the Premier League due to a lack of investment.
When asked if Tottenham suffered from limited expenses and a lack of depth, the central back told Telemundo Deportes: `The Truth is that I would say no comments, but …
“Manchester City is in competition each year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its team, Chelsea strengthens their team, is not doing well, strengthening again and now they see results. These are things to imitate.
“You must realize that something is wrong, I hope they realize it.
“In recent years, it’s always the same: first, players, then coaches staff change, and they are always the same responsible people.
“Hopefully they realize who are the real officials, and we are going ahead because it is a beautiful club which, with the structure it has, could easily compete with the title every year.”
Tottenham is on their way to his worst Premier League campaign while they are 15th – but stay hunting to end their long trophy drought after reaching the semi -finals of the Europa League with victory on Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
