The security of the Missouri State University, Todric McGee, died early Saturday in an injury hospital he suffered on Friday at his home, the university announced.
The agents answered a call for well-being on Friday in an apartments a few minutes from the university and found a man, whom they identified as McGee, with “a possible accidental shot injury”, according to the Springfield police department. They transported him to hospital with serious injuries, where he died later, police said.
Local authorities have said that an investigation into the details of his death was underway. McGee was 21 years old.
MSU said in a statement released on Saturday that McGee entered its fifth season with the Missouri State football program and was the Bears’ departure security in 2023 and 2024.
“This tragedy has shaken our football program at the heart, and we want them to know that we are here to support them in all possible ways at the moment extremely difficult,” said the director of athletics of the state of Missouri, Patrick Ransdell, in a press release.
Ryan Beard, football coach, asked for privacy for his family and the football team.
“Our football family is in shock and in mourning to the loss of Todric,” said Beard. “Join us to pray for Todric and the people who loved him.”
McGee grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated from the Wichita Northwest high school. He specialized in the exercise and movement sciences in MSU, according to his biography on the school website. He is survived by his parents, Stephanie Pope and Amiel McGee, his brother, Chaquil and his sister Tahlia, said the website.
