Nakamura seemed to guide the match to a draw but failed with a late error that presented the victory to Carlsen. Nakamura faces a situation to do or do in match 2 and will have to win this in order to take the final in the liaison break.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Fabiano Caruana defeated Vincent Keymer in 3rd place playoffs, while Arigaisi took over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the battle for fifth place. The Paris leg is the second event of the inaugural tour of the Grand Slam of the Freestyle chess, which started in February at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort.
The German Grand Master Vincent Keymer struck his weight to win the event, beating Carlsen in the semi-finals before defeating Caruana in the final to go to the top of the tour ranking.
