San Jose – A San Jose fire captain was arrested Thursday, suspected of having stolen from controlled substances at least one city fire station, according to the authorities.
The San Jose fire service reported on Monday reported the discovery of several drugs under its potentially damaged or falsified custody, a spokesman for the San Jose police said.
Police say the detectives identified the Captain of San Jose Mark Moalem fires as the main suspect and obtained search and arrest warrants.
Additional evidence connecting Moalem to the flight were found during a search of his home, the police said.
Moalem was sentenced to Santa Clara County prison for burglary and endangering children, as well as for drugs related to drugs, police said.
The fire service has carried out an audit of its controlled substances, and it is suspected that drugs may have been taken in 16 additional and falsified boxes, the offices of the director of the city of San Jose and the mayor said in a joint statement.
“Lives depend on the ability of our firefighters to administer medical care in an emergency, which is why we take the theft of controlled substances very seriously,” said Mayor Matt Mahan. “I am grateful to our municipal director and police chief to have acted quickly and decisively by opening an investigation and holding responsible officials.”
Municipal director Jennifer Maguire added that she “would not tolerate criminal behavior”.
“The allegations are deeply worrying and represent a serious violation of public confidence,” she said. “I want to be unequivocal: any conduct that endangers community security or undermines the integrity of our public institution will be approached with the greatest gravity.”
