San Juan Capistrano – Stellar pitching was the business card of the San Juan Hills baseball team and it was exposed Thursday against Trabuco Hills.
Anthony Rasic, Cameron Morrissey and Alex Landie combined to eliminate Trabuco Hills 1-0 in a League without a match.
San Juan Hills’ pitch staff held adversaries at two or less in 10 games this season.
“They looked really good today against a good team from Trabuco Hills who marked a lot of races all year round,” said San Juan Hills coach Bret Levier. “While we are entering the last weeks of the season, we will have to count on our enclosure and it was good to see that these guys are successful today.”
Rasic started the match and granted three strokes in four rounds. Morrissey succeeded in two stick withdrawal in two work sleeves and Landie failed a runner in third row in seventh to get the backup.
In a match where bats were silent, San Juan Hills (13-8) had a clutch if necessary and Trabuco Hills (15-6-1) had trouble getting sure with runners in a score position.
Cash Meyer led the third round with a single for San Juan Hills and progressed to the second goal on a launch error. After a sacrifice stroke, Tanner Kessler hit a score single for the game alone.
“He does such a good job at the top of the order for us,” said Levier about Kessler. “Strike after hitting, he’s the ball and gives us a chance. It was really good to get it on the clutch there.”
Trabuco Hills failed the runners in a three -round scoring position. The Mustangs had runners the second and third of the third round and Rasic attracted a pop fly to an attempt by Brunrie to end the Channel.
In the fourth round, a basic trabuco Hills runner marked on a pop fly, but was excluded for leaving the base early.
The Mustangs had a runner in third goal in seventh round and Landie drew a pop fly on the field to finish the match.
“It was really nice to see our fingers staying under pressure and getting big withdrawals,” said Lever.
Sam Crouse and Josh Fitch launched well for Trabuco Hills and only granted four strokes. Fitch granted only one blow in 2⅓ relief sleeves.
The two teams are first in their respective leagues by a narrow margin. San Juan Hills is first in the Sea View League with a league victory more than second place in San Clemente.
Trabuco Hills is in first place in the ranking of the South Coast league with a league victory more than Oliso Niguel and Tesoro, who are tied for second place. These two teams play championship matches on Friday and a victory would even put them with Trabuco Hills in first place.
“It’s really easy during your Bye week so that high school students take off,” said Lever. “I hope they understand that they can succeed in these pressure situations and we can develop it for the next two weeks.”
San Juan Hills has a series of three games against Beckman next week and Trabuco Hills has a series against Tesoro.
This is the first season that the teams of these two leagues play three -game series during the same week rather than the old game method twice in a week, followed by a third game on a later date.
“This is one of those years when anyone can beat anyone,” said Levier. “Having three games in a week creates a little chaos because it challenges your depth of pitching. It’s exhausting and you have the impression that you have to present yourself a little. We know that the next two weeks will be a version and I hope that we can continue to play well.”
