Bruce Vilanch was the editor -in -chief of the Oscars for 14 years. This is the kind of entertainment he writes for where he really excels: star varieties with large copper musical numbers. A show by Bruce Vilanch will almost certainly have songs where the actor on list A turns to the camera and wink at a joke that she has just spoken of herself.
He worked on countless television shows over 50 years of age. Sometimes these shows are great! Think of Billy Crystal with Oscars, or Seoutout Live Shows for Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin, Robin Williams and more. Tins that are not so great, well, you can read on this subject in his new book: It seemed to be a bad idea at the time: the worst television shows in history and other things I wrote. It includes things like Brady Bunch variety timeclumsy songs during the reward, the now sadly famous Star Wars holiday special.
Vilanch tells Bullseye stories behind the scenes of the shows we saw and we asked: “Who said yes to that?” He also talks about gay culture in Hollywood PrĂ©-Stonewall and the current state of varieties on television.
