Katie Boulter found her range late to draw Great Britain for victory over Germany in the Billie Jean King Cup.
After the beginner Sonay Kartal put the GB 1-0 to equality, Boulter beat Tatjana Maria 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Whatever the result of the double rubber, mathematics are now simple: the link on Saturday between the hosts of the Netherlands and Great Britain is a winner to do everything for a trip to Shenzhen for the final in September.
The first set was a ugly watch and when Boulter made a breakdown in the second, she looked at a third consecutive defeat of a miserable season. But the 28-year-old said this week that she had set up her mission to win the very first Billie Jean King Cup in Great Britain and she found a way to overthrow the match.
Clay is at a distance its lowest surface, so it has never been simple, even against the 37 -year -old world No80.
Boulter had beaten Maria during their three previous meetings, but the eccentric style of the German – with many slices of the two wings – is perfectly calculated to disturb the natural game of natural swing of the British.
Her service was raped early, then she reproduced twice in a match to make a double break.

The second set was much better, Boulter realizing that she had to introduce herself to finish the points on the net, rather than let Maria move Ad Infinitum away. She also used the drop of drop much more against an opponent in depth.
From 3-2, she won four games in a row to force a decision maker. During the first match of this third set, Boulter struck three consecutive return winners to break and from there, she covered the house.
“It was a really difficult match, especially since it was my first match on Clay, against someone who is such a good player and very eccentric, never easy to play against her,” said Boulter. “I am really satisfied with the way I came back today and I found a way and I played very good things in the second and third. I am very proud of myself today.
