Since its entry into office, the Trump administration has moved aggressively to revoke the temporary legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were authorized in the country under President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
From now on, the administration takes drastic measures to put pressure on some of these immigrants and others who had legal status to “self-care” by effectively canceling the social security numbers they had legally obtained, according to documents examined by the New York Times and interviews with six familiar people with plans.
The objective is to reduce these people to the use of crucial financial services such as bank accounts and credit cards, as well as their access to government benefits.
The effort is based on a new surprising tactic: reusing the “master’s file” of social security, which for years has been used to follow the dead people who should no longer receive services, to include the names of living people who, according to the government, should be treated as if they were dead. Due to their added to the death database, they would be put on black list from a form of coveted identity which allows them to earn and more easily money.
Earlier this week, the names of more than 6,300 migrants whose legal status had just been dismissed were added to the file, according to the documents.
The initial names are limited to persons who, according to the administration, are convicted criminals and “alleged terrorists”, according to documents. But officials said the effort could expand to include others in the country without authorization.
