Zelenskyy previously said that the first capture of Chinese citizens fighting alongside Russian troops was proof of another country in China, supporting Moscow militarily in his war against Ukraine, after Iran and North Korea.
“But there is a difference. The North Koreans were fighting against us in the Kursk region, while the Chinese fought against us in Ukraine,” Zelenskyy told kyiv on Tuesday. “Ukraine is a strong country, but we cannot fight against several countries alone.”
The assertion of Zelenskyy that many other Chinese citizens are fighting for Russia in Ukraine have aroused criticism from Beijing.
“Such a complaint has no basis in fact,” Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
“China’s position on the question of the crisis of Ukraine is very clear and is widely recognized by the international community,” he said. “The Ukrainian party must see the efforts of China and the constructive role for the political settlement of the crisis of Ukraine.”
Beijing “checks the information with the Ukrainian party” on the two Chinese prisoners of war, said Lin.
“Let me emphasize that the Chinese government always asks Chinese nationals to stay away from armed conflict zones, to avoid any form of involvement in armed conflicts, and in particular to avoid participation in military operations of any party,” added Lin.
